World Tourism Day 2021 at Meeru Island Resort & Spa

World Tourism Day 2021 - Meeru Island Resort & Spa Maldives

Kicking off the Festivities for World Tourism Day 2021

Happy World Tourism Day! Falling in line with this year’s theme for the day, ‘Tourism for Inclusive Growth’, Meeru Island Resort & Spa held a cultural event that displayed the diversity of the Maldives’ rich history and culture.

For the cultural display, the team presented the ‘Dhafi negun’. The dance goes back decades to when the Maldives was still a sultanate when the labourers would celebrate a hard day’s work by doing a celebratory dance. The men would walk in pairs of two, with wooden spatula-like instruments. First, the dancers would sing a traditional ‘Gaa Odi Lava’ which was sung in Arabic. The dancers would then form a circle around a special ‘present’ usually gifted by the Sultan, singing and dancing around it until the beats became stronger, the chanting, and dancing more trance-like. Eventually, one of the dancers would pick up the ‘dhafi’ or present, and the dancers would slowly disperse.

The team at Meeru Island hosted the culture-filled evening with a lot of support from our guests. The sunny beach overlooking our Dhoni Bar was packed with guests cheering on, and looking in awe as the drums beat faster and the dancing more energetic. The evening was further enriched by our guests joining in on the dancing.

Here is how you already experience Maldivian Heritage at Meeru

Much of the beauty that is Meeru Island Resort & Spa originates from the authentic and proud practice of Maldivian heritage. By preserving the unspoiled natural resources of the Maldives Islands, Meeru continuously helps create an unforgettable holiday experience.

To honor World Heritage Day, here are the ways that you already experience Maldivian Heritage at Meeru, from arrival to departure and everything in between:

Abundant Ocean

From arrival, you are transported by speedboat to the Island, which is only a 55-minute transfer away from Velana International Airport. The experience allows you to take in the first natural resource, the abundant ocean surrounding the Maldives.

A Maldivian Welcome

Your welcome to Meeru is with harmonious song and the sound of Bodu Beru drums. The Guest Services and Reception team adorns functional garments made from cotton, with traditional influences in design and threading.

Authentic Villas and Facilities

The design of each facility is influenced by traditional architecture that uses one of the most useful trees in the world, from the authentic, thatched Villas, to the high ceiling Restaurants. The popular Coconut Palm Tree is considered the Maldivian National Tree or “Tree of Life” for the many ways that it is used, to this day.

Maldivian Nights

Every Friday is Maldivian Night at Meeru Island, from the delicious themed cuisine at Farivalhu and Maalan Buffet Restaurants, to the informative Maldivian Cultural Presentation and Bodu Beru Dance Show.

Meeru Museum

Cultural Awareness

The Meeru Museum exhibits several artifacts from centuries ago that portray the Maldivian way of life. Particularly how the early local Maldivians cooked, dressed, traveled, and schooled.
An even rarer experience is the baby blue whale skeleton next to the museum where guests will learn how this animal came to Meeru.

Additionally,  Meeru offers excursions such as Casting and Big Game Fishing, where you can learn how to reel in the big fish like a Maldivian fisherman – Local style!

Subtle Cultural Fusions

Scattered across the island are traditional swings. Suspended from coconut trees are the single sings and fixed on the beach, the family-style large swings which provide a window into how the locals spend their time relaxing and a glimpse to the views they saw of the sea.

The Kurumba or the young drinking coconut is a refreshing drink guest of all ages can experience at the bar.

Beach and destination weddings including renewals of vows ceremonies incorporate cultural elements including drumming, local decor, and Maldivian styled wedding pavilion.

Recap at Meeru Island: Initiatives to Protect the Environment and the Ocean

On June 5, 2018, Meeru Island Resort & Spa celebrated World Environment Day with an educational and insightful Back-of-House Tour, which included our very own Meeru Garden and Greenhouse, as well as the Fresh Water and Water Bottling Plants. Meeru continues to actively show support of an environmentally sustainable future for the Maldives through a daily commitment towards creating awareness.

Since the day began in 1972, people from around the world hosted a number of events in support of more positive environmental action, from connecting with nature to reducing carbon footprints and action against wildlife crime. Meeru has been an avid participant of World Environment Day over the years, but also, in each and every way to conserve the pristine nature of the Maldives and protect our unique marine life.

Closely related to a sustainable environment for the Maldives, is preserving and protecting our ocean. With 26 atolls covering 90 000 square kilometers of the Indian Ocean and over 2000 species of tropical fish residing in the Maldives’ warm, crystal clear waters, protecting our Ocean is just as important.

For World Oceans Day on June 8, 2018, Meeru hosted a lagoon cleaning activity together with the Euro-Divers team, where staff and guests joined in an effort to clear out the pristine lagoon of any remaining debris, which is a daily action towards maintaining our beautiful marine ecology.

Both occasions where held under the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution”, to coincide with theme from Earth Day on April 22. The theme recognizes the effects of plastic pollution on our environment, wildlife, marine ecology and the planet as a whole, with billions of people building awareness and taking action towards a plastic-free future.

At Meeru, we are dedicated to advocating environmentally sustainable business operations, with an aim to positively impact the communities in which we operate through energy-efficient practices and sustainable education while maintaining high-quality services to our guests. We continuously strive to incorporate good environmental practices into all of our decisions and operations.
