Meet the Team: Ahmed Hameed, Captain of the Meeru’s Kamana Yacht

For this month’s feature on Meet the Team, we interviewed one of the longest-serving team members of Meeru, Ahmed Hameed.

Ahmed has worked in Meeru for almost 14 years. Having initially joined as a Boat Crew in 2007, Ahmed quickly worked his way up the career ladder to be promoted as Captain.

In his current role, Hameed is the captain of Meeru’s classic timber motor yacht Kamana Yacht which takes the guests on numerous excursions including the sunset yacht cruising to overnight sailing.

Q: Tell me a bit about yourself and your background, where are you from and where you have worked and how it has shaped you?
I was born and raised in Lh. Naifaru. However today I live with my family N. Henbadhoo. It is where I call home now.

Q: Why did you decide to become a Boat Crew/Captain?
Growing up, I loved to watch people sail. The old boats back then were a thing of fascination for me to watch, how they operated and how the people sailed them so effortlessly. This was when I started developing an interest in being a Captain.

I also loved the fact that being a Captain meant providing a great service to people in getting them from point A to point B safely. As this is a job that makes you responsible for a lot of people’s lives, I am always extra careful and take my responsibility very seriously.

Q: What do you love most about your work?
I always try to be a team player and try to lead by example. I do my best to impart whatever knowledge I have gained over the years to my team. I strongly believe that there is always room for growth and improvement and so I always encourage my team to learn new things to stay on top of their game.

Q: What hobbies do you enjoy when you are not at work?
I have always enjoyed playing and watching football and Volleyball.

In addition to that, I of course love going for a swim, line fishing, and spear-fishing as well.
Kamana Yacht of Meeru Island
Photo: Kamana during sunset

Q: What safety measures can you advise when onboard?
I never forget that I carry the lives of many people every day- multiple times. So my number one rule is to always follow the safety measures implemented by the government and to follow safety policies laid out by the resort.

For my passengers, I would always encourage them to follow the instructions of the boat captain.

Q: What is your favorite excursion?
My favourite excursion offered by the resort is Turtle Explorer. This is a full-day trip exploring the marine life of multiple locations and it gives me such joy to be able to watch these beautiful reefs.

Guest can meet Ahmed while on excursions on the Kamana. Excursions

Meet the Team: Nasheed, Meeru’s Housekeeping Supervisor

Meet the Team: Abdulla, Meeru's Housekeeping Supervisor

Meet the Meeru Team: Abdulla Nasheed

Meeru Island has created the ‘Meet the Meeru Team’ blog series to recognise the outstanding work of our team members and for our guests to have a chance to take a peek behind the scenes and get to know some of the faces who make us your favourite palm-fringed paradise in the Maldives.

Originally from Kurinbi, one of the inhabited islands of Haa Dhaalu in Thiladhunmathi Atoll, Abdulla works as a Housekeeping Supervisor and has been with the resort since 2017.

Abdulla, Meeru's Housekeeping Supervisor

How do you describe yourself?

I describe myself as a hardworking individual who always gives his best to accomplish all tasks. I can work under pressure well and handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a calm and organised manner.

Can you share with us your journey with Meeru Island?

I started my hospitality career at Meeru as a Gift Shop Assistant in 2017, and then I got promoted to the Housekeeping Coordinator role in 2019.  Now, I am working as the resort’s Housekeeping Supervisor.

I have decided to take these moves because I believe that when life opens up opportunities for you, you either take them or stay afraid of not taking them.

What do you like most about your job?

What I love most about my job is that I get to meet many people with different personalities. I also enjoy the interaction with both our resort team and guests.

What do you do in your free time?

I like to play football and watch movies in my spare time – these activities help me relax my mind after a long day at work.

Of all the room categories at Meeru, what is your most favourite?

Water Front Villa is my favourite category at Meeru Island. These villas are located on the beach, at the water’s edge, featuring a private sundeck and a spectacular view of the aquamarine lagoon.

Please share with us some of your career advice.

When you are happy at work and love what you do, you can become excellent at your role. People who enjoy their jobs are more likely to be motivated, optimistic, and perform stellar work.

Additionally, every experience is significant and worth having and should be dealt with passion and enthusiasm.

World Tourism Day 2021 at Meeru Island Resort & Spa

World Tourism Day 2021 - Meeru Island Resort & Spa Maldives

Kicking off the Festivities for World Tourism Day 2021

Happy World Tourism Day! Falling in line with this year’s theme for the day, ‘Tourism for Inclusive Growth’, Meeru Island Resort & Spa held a cultural event that displayed the diversity of the Maldives’ rich history and culture.

For the cultural display, the team presented the ‘Dhafi negun’. The dance goes back decades to when the Maldives was still a sultanate when the labourers would celebrate a hard day’s work by doing a celebratory dance. The men would walk in pairs of two, with wooden spatula-like instruments. First, the dancers would sing a traditional ‘Gaa Odi Lava’ which was sung in Arabic. The dancers would then form a circle around a special ‘present’ usually gifted by the Sultan, singing and dancing around it until the beats became stronger, the chanting, and dancing more trance-like. Eventually, one of the dancers would pick up the ‘dhafi’ or present, and the dancers would slowly disperse.

The team at Meeru Island hosted the culture-filled evening with a lot of support from our guests. The sunny beach overlooking our Dhoni Bar was packed with guests cheering on, and looking in awe as the drums beat faster and the dancing more energetic. The evening was further enriched by our guests joining in on the dancing.

Meet the Team: Trevin, Meeru’s Chef de Cuisine

Chef Trevin – Meeru Island Resort & Spa Maldives

Meet the Meeru Team: Trevin Gunasekera

The culinary experience is a highlight at Meeru Island Resort & Spa, and for many of our guests, it is one of the reasons they keep coming back to our palm-fringed paradise, year after year.

For this ‘Meet the Meeru Team’ blog series, meet Trevin GunasekeraMeeru’s Chef de Cuisine, one of our dedicated kitchen team members behind all the deliciousness on the island.

Originally from Sri Lanka, Trevin works as a Chef de Cuisine at Asian Wok and has been with the property for over 14 years.

He joined Meeru in 2007 as a Sushi Teppanyaki Chef and has had the opportunity to progress over the years.

Chef Trevin – Meeru Island Maldives

Tell me about yourself. What is it like to be a chef at the resort?

I decided to become a chef because I love cooking and seeing others enjoy the food I prepare for them.

Cooking makes me happy, and it has always been my dream to become a great chef. It is a fulfilling profession that allows me to learn new things every day.  When I serve meals to anyone, I always put in all my passion, love, and hard work.

How did you start your journey of becoming a chef?

I started my career working in kitchens during my twenties. After finishing my training at a culinary school, I had the opportunity to work at ‘Mount Royal Beach Hotel’ in Sri Lanka. Later on, I joined Hilton Colombo and worked for the hotel’s Japanese Restaurant for 14 years. Thus, I brought all my culinary experiences with me here at Meeru Island.

How did you come to be in the Maldives?

Crown & Champa Resorts’ (management company of Meeru Island Resort & Spa) previous CEO used to be a regular customer at Hilton Colombo. I used to serve him with his guests, and he was the one who opened the doors for me to where I am at Meeru now.

What do you love most about working at Meeru Island?

Working at Meeru is excellent. The management looks after all employees well by providing great recreational facilities and staff accommodation. I particularly love the staff swimming pool and gym. Additionally, we are like a big family here, and it gives me a good feeling, especially when you are away from home.

What hobbies do you enjoy in your free time?

I enjoy going to the gym, listening to great music, watching movies, and chatting with friends.

What is your favourite dining option amongst the wide selection of culinary offerings at the resort?

I like the Teppanyaki dining experience at Asian Wok. It is where our chefs grill, flip, and cook an assort of seafood, meats, and vegetables on a flaming table right in front of guests – it is like a live cooking show but in true Japanese style!

What culinary experience will you recommend guests to try?

I recommend that they try our special dinners at the Asian Wok beach, such as the Seafood & Lobster, BBQ, and Full Moon. Guests can enjoy a delectable array of food according to their own liking, tastes, and preferences.
