Tips to start your diving adventure in the Maldives

The colorful and lively underwater world is one of the most popular attractions for the Maldives. In an interview with Oliver Weissensteiner, Euro-Divers’ Dive Center Manager at Meeru Island Resort & Spa, learn more about the exciting marine life and diving adventures to explore at Meeru.

Oliver was born and raised in the Italian Alps with a Hotelier Family, and grew up biking and skiing. He has been a Diving Professional since 2003, but fascinated with the underwater world since the first free diving and spearfishing experiences as a teenager. Oliver has traveled to Australia, Egypt, Honduras and Mexico before arriving in the Maldives in 2008, where I started working with Euro-Divers. He first worked in Vilamendhoo, then Eriyadu, and finally Kandooma. After having spend 2 years home skiing, and motorbiking in the Alps, and a few months in Malta to explore the Wrecks, Caves and work on his technical diving certifications and education, Oliver is back on Meeru with the Euro-Divers Family.

Would you describe diving as your passion? If yes, why?

I traveled the 7 seas, explored and visited many countries, and lived like a pirate at sea. The thing I love most in my life, is diving and sharing these beautiful experiences with others.

Which reef or diving spot is your favorite?

In the North Male Atoll, Helengeli Thila and HP Reef are 2 of my absolute favorites.

Describe your normal day at the Euro-Divers Center?

Diving with Mantas in the morning, and going for a scooter dive at the wreck in the afternoon.

What are some of the popular species of fish that you would find on a typical diving trip in the North Male’ Atoll?

Mantas, especially during the season. All year around sharks, rays and turtles can be seen basically every day.

Tell us about the latest diving equipment that is available for rental.

We have several under water cameras for rental, and 2 different types of underwater propulsion vehicles (scooters).

What is the best compliment you have received from a guest as a Dive Instructor?

A student of mine who was afraid of water and panicked just looking at it, has managed to overcome his fears with me, completed the course a few years ago, and is now an eager diver with several hundred logged dives.

Do you have any advice for first-time divers?

Take a snorkel and fins, get comfortable snorkeling first, and once you are not afraid of the water, take it to the next step and explore a completely new environment and element.

Share one of the ways you and your team ensure that guests safely enjoy diving at Meeru?

We do an orientation dive free of charge with new guests, so to get to know each other underwater in the shallow waters of the lagoon. This also gives the divers a chance to refresh their skills and test their new equipment before coming on our boats.
