Meet the Team – Abdulla Hussain Fulhu, Electrician at Meeru Island

The Meeru team is filled with exceptional talent and dedicated individuals who have been with Meeru for a long time. As one of the team members behind the scene ensuring guests the best holiday experience, for this month’s Meet the team, we interviewed Meeru’s electrician, Abdulla Hussain Fulhu, nicknamed ‘Lhiyambe’ (brother-in-law in Dhivehi).

ABOUT YOU

Q: Tell us about yourself and what it is like to be an Electrician at the resort? How long have you been with the resort?

I am Abdulla Hussain Fulhu – usually called “Lhiyanbe” by my colleagues, born 3rd February 1972,  from the island of Hinnavaru, Lhaviyani Atoll, Maldives and married with 2 children.

It was 2010 when I joined Meeru Island Resort as Air Condition (HVAC) technician helper and now currently working as an Electrician. I am on my 12th year working on this beautiful island and I truly enjoy the people and the working environment.

Q: Tell us about your background, where you have worked and how it has shaped you?

My previous work experience was in Hinnavaru islands’ biggest shopping outlet from 2002-2008 as a Sales Manager.

I was determined to explore more of my technical capabilities in a different working environment, so I decided to join my first resort job, which was at Meeru Island Resort.

Q: Why did you decide to become an Electrician at a resort island?

Being a Maldivian, we have many opportunities to explore the resort hospitality industry.

Joining the Maintenance Department, I was exposed to attending requests, servicing and troubleshooting AC units and handling all related equipment. Working in this environment motivated me to complete my National Certificate III in 2016 and Advance Certificate Level 4 in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning and Mechanics Course in 2017.

The next opportunity opened for me as an Electrician because I have the required certification (National Certificate III – Electrical Course conducted by MIT), which paved the path for me to be more exposed and acquire more knowledge as part of the Maintenance Department team.

Q: What do you love most about your work?

My work exposes me to daily challenges and I have to make sure the work is done up to standard and code. I love talking and helping guests while dealing with any issues that require rectification.

Q: What hobbies do you enjoy when you are not at work?

When not at work, I enjoy drinking coffee and playing games in “Ekuveni” (Team activities and Entertainment area). I believe that it is important to connect and socialize with colleagues and friends in order to maintain a positive environment both during and off work periods.

Q: What is your favourite sports, what sports do you play?

My favourite sport since childhood is Football. In Meeru I am one of the regular players in my department and we have been three times champion in the Inter-department football tournament.

I also do long distance running and I was an athlete during my younger years.

Q: What advice or motivational words can you give to your co-workers?

To keep learning new skills and knowledge, get the certifications and continue to work with determination and drive.

World Tourism Day 2021 at Meeru Island Resort & Spa

World Tourism Day 2021 - Meeru Island Resort & Spa Maldives

Kicking off the Festivities for World Tourism Day 2021

Happy World Tourism Day! Falling in line with this year’s theme for the day, ‘Tourism for Inclusive Growth’, Meeru Island Resort & Spa held a cultural event that displayed the diversity of the Maldives’ rich history and culture.

For the cultural display, the team presented the ‘Dhafi negun’. The dance goes back decades to when the Maldives was still a sultanate when the labourers would celebrate a hard day’s work by doing a celebratory dance. The men would walk in pairs of two, with wooden spatula-like instruments. First, the dancers would sing a traditional ‘Gaa Odi Lava’ which was sung in Arabic. The dancers would then form a circle around a special ‘present’ usually gifted by the Sultan, singing and dancing around it until the beats became stronger, the chanting, and dancing more trance-like. Eventually, one of the dancers would pick up the ‘dhafi’ or present, and the dancers would slowly disperse.

The team at Meeru Island hosted the culture-filled evening with a lot of support from our guests. The sunny beach overlooking our Dhoni Bar was packed with guests cheering on, and looking in awe as the drums beat faster and the dancing more energetic. The evening was further enriched by our guests joining in on the dancing.

Originally from Sri Lanka, Trevin works as a Chef de Cuisine at Asian Wok and has been with the property for over 14 years.

He joined Meeru in 2007 as a Sushi Teppanyaki Chef and has had the opportunity to progress over the years.

Chef Trevin – Meeru Island Maldives

Tell me about yourself. What is it like to be a chef at the resort?

I decided to become a chef because I love cooking and seeing others enjoy the food I prepare for them.

Cooking makes me happy, and it has always been my dream to become a great chef. It is a fulfilling profession that allows me to learn new things every day.  When I serve meals to anyone, I always put in all my passion, love, and hard work.

How did you start your journey of becoming a chef?

I started my career working in kitchens during my twenties. After finishing my training at a culinary school, I had the opportunity to work at ‘Mount Royal Beach Hotel’ in Sri Lanka. Later on, I joined Hilton Colombo and worked for the hotel’s Japanese Restaurant for 14 years. Thus, I brought all my culinary experiences with me here at Meeru Island.

How did you come to be in the Maldives?

Crown & Champa Resorts’ (management company of Meeru Island Resort & Spa) previous CEO used to be a regular customer at Hilton Colombo. I used to serve him with his guests, and he was the one who opened the doors for me to where I am at Meeru now.

What do you love most about working at Meeru Island?

Working at Meeru is excellent. The management looks after all employees well by providing great recreational facilities and staff accommodation. I particularly love the staff swimming pool and gym. Additionally, we are like a big family here, and it gives me a good feeling, especially when you are away from home.

What hobbies do you enjoy in your free time?

I enjoy going to the gym, listening to great music, watching movies, and chatting with friends.

What is your favourite dining option amongst the wide selection of culinary offerings at the resort?

I like the Teppanyaki dining experience at Asian Wok. It is where our chefs grill, flip, and cook an assort of seafood, meats, and vegetables on a flaming table right in front of guests – it is like a live cooking show but in true Japanese style!

What culinary experience will you recommend guests to try?

I recommend that they try our special dinners at the Asian Wok beach, such as the Seafood & Lobster, BBQ, and Full Moon. Guests can enjoy a delectable array of food according to their own liking, tastes, and preferences.
