Meet the Team: Mohamed Ali, Chef De Partie at Meeru Island

There is plenty of talent to be found in Meeru Island Resort & Spa and Meeru’s culinary team can have their exceptional individuals. Here at Meeru, we have been lucky enough to build a team that truly excels in the kitchen. In our latest blog, let us introduce you to Ali, one of the teams’ chefs de parties.

In his current role, guests can find him at the buffet restaurants and serving on the yachts.

Q: Tell me about yourself and what it is like to be a Chef De Partie at the resort? How long have you been with the resort?
My name is Mohamed Ali, I am 50 years old and I have been working in Meeru for over 25 years.

Q: Tell me a bit about yourself and your background, where are you from and where you have worked and how it has shaped you?
I am from an island called Nolhivaranfaru in Haa Dhaalu Atoll. I started work as a crew member for a yacht called Hagern, before becoming a waiter onboard, then a kitchen helper and finally a Chef.

Q: Why did you decide to become a Chef De Partie?
I enjoyed my work as a kitchen helper and there was a position opened to become a Commis Chef and I took the opportunity. Then as I worked hard, I got promoted and now I am one of the Chef De Partie who enjoys cooking both for the staff and the guests of Meeru.

Q: What do you love most about the resort you work at?
I get to work on the Kamana, one of Meeru yachts as we go on excursions with guests which are very fun at the same time I get to prepare meals for guests of different nationalities.

Q: What hobbies do you enjoy when you are not at work?
In my free time, I enjoy talking with friends, playing football, fishing and snorkelling

Q: What is your favourite among the wide selection of food in the buffet?
I enjoy Maldivian food on the weekly Maldivian Theam Night and my favourite is Garudhiya (Maldivian Fish Broth) with Fried Fish a perfect combination eaten together with a variety of accompaniments and side dishes like thelulifay (fried drumstick leaves), boiled yam, fresh lime to name a few.

Q: What food on the menu will you recommend guests to try? Why?
Meeru guests should try the fish at the buffet and for a more extravagant evening to order the Maldivian lobster which is served with fresh vegetables mostly from the Meeru garden.

MasterChef Sweden Latest Cook Out In Meeru Island Maldives

Several years ago, when MasterChef Sweden aired for the first time on Swedish National TV, nobody anticipated having a pivotal episode of the competition to be shot here in Meeru Island Resort & spa.

November 2021 saw the Sveriges mästerkock 2021, (MasterChef Sweden 2021) that airs on TV4, its production crew, judges ( from across Sweden such as Mischa Billing, Markus Aujalay, and Tom Sjostedt) and the contests arrive at Meeru for episode 12 of season 11 which was filmed on Meeru Island in the Maldives instead of the studio kitchen in Sweden.

To welcome the team, Meeru Island along with the Maldives Chefs Guild, hosted a Maldivian night themed dinner. The evening kicked off with the contestants arriving at Meeru Island via speed boat while the judges was flown in via domestic seaplane. The Meeru team members’ welcomed the MasterChef team in traditional Maldivian attire, music and drums, handing them delicious coconut-infused drinks.

This was followed by an elegantly prepared buffet dinner of authentic local cuisine, accompanied by the joyous sounds of Bodu Beru played by members of the Meeru team.

For the cooking segment, the team sourced their vegetables, salads, fruits and spices from Meeru’s Organic Gardens. Fish was caught by the contestants themselves using traditional Maldivian hand-reel fishing excursion they took the same day.

The team from Maldives Chefs Guild, along with the incredible multi-national team of chefs of Meeru explained to the contestants how each ingredient was used for their taste. Using the information and tasting, two teams prepared locally themed dishes for the competition at the oceanfront Asian Wok Restaurant. The testing session by the judges was held on the beach, where the gentlemen’s group won the round.

The following morning the elimination round was held at the Pavillion Bar. The contestants had to taste Meeru’s signature curry dish, ‘Kadu Kukulhu’ (a  fish-based dish named Sea Chicken) and write down the ingredients.

The Maldives cooking challenge ended with five contestants qualifying for the next round, where they ended the day sailing into the Maldivian sunset style in the timber yacht Kamana.
