MasterChef Sweden Latest Cook Out In Meeru Island Maldives

Several years ago, when MasterChef Sweden aired for the first time on Swedish National TV, nobody anticipated having a pivotal episode of the competition to be shot here in Meeru Island Resort & spa.

November 2021 saw the Sveriges mästerkock 2021, (MasterChef Sweden 2021) that airs on TV4, its production crew, judges ( from across Sweden such as Mischa Billing, Markus Aujalay, and Tom Sjostedt) and the contests arrive at Meeru for episode 12 of season 11 which was filmed on Meeru Island in the Maldives instead of the studio kitchen in Sweden.

To welcome the team, Meeru Island along with the Maldives Chefs Guild, hosted a Maldivian night themed dinner. The evening kicked off with the contestants arriving at Meeru Island via speed boat while the judges was flown in via domestic seaplane. The Meeru team members’ welcomed the MasterChef team in traditional Maldivian attire, music and drums, handing them delicious coconut-infused drinks.

This was followed by an elegantly prepared buffet dinner of authentic local cuisine, accompanied by the joyous sounds of Bodu Beru played by members of the Meeru team.

For the cooking segment, the team sourced their vegetables, salads, fruits and spices from Meeru’s Organic Gardens. Fish was caught by the contestants themselves using traditional Maldivian hand-reel fishing excursion they took the same day.

The team from Maldives Chefs Guild, along with the incredible multi-national team of chefs of Meeru explained to the contestants how each ingredient was used for their taste. Using the information and tasting, two teams prepared locally themed dishes for the competition at the oceanfront Asian Wok Restaurant. The testing session by the judges was held on the beach, where the gentlemen’s group won the round.

The following morning the elimination round was held at the Pavillion Bar. The contestants had to taste Meeru’s signature curry dish, ‘Kadu Kukulhu’ (a  fish-based dish named Sea Chicken) and write down the ingredients.

The Maldives cooking challenge ended with five contestants qualifying for the next round, where they ended the day sailing into the Maldivian sunset style in the timber yacht Kamana.

Meet the Team: Hawwa Naseer, Meeru’s Guest Services Supervisor

Meeru Island is one of the longest-serving island resorts in the Maldives with rich culture, history, and its dream-like palm fringes towering into the sky. The greatest compliment to this beach-filled island is undoubtedly the staff, hence making every guest’s journey a treasured experience of a lifetime.

For this month’s meet the team blog we decided to sit down with one of the faces of Meeru Island; Hawwa Naseer our Guest Services Supervisor from the Front of house department.

Born and raised in the Maldives, Hawwa’s career started in Meeru 8 years ago in 2014 as Guest Services Assistant. Since then Hawwas has been amongst well-recognized faces in front of the house.

Q: Tell me about yourself and what it is like to be a Guest Services Supervisor at the resort? How long have you been with the resort?

I love interacting with guests and assisting them to the best of my ability. As a Guest Services Supervisor, I learned that it is not just doing the job but making sure that you do it with all your best. I have been in Meeru for almost 8 years and still counting. I enjoy working with the Front of the House team as we are like family and not just colleagues.

Q: Tell me a bit about yourself and your background, where are you from and where you have worked, and how it has shaped you?

I am from Addu City which is the southernmost island group in the Maldives. Before working in Meeru I worked as a Telephone Operator from one of the resorts here in the Maldives. At my previous work, my colleagues would ask me to assist the guests and attend to replying to their queries. With this experience, I had the opportunity to improve and learn a lot about the Front of the House operation. This was my stepping stone to be part of the Meeru Family.

Q: Why did you decide to become a Guest Services Supervisor?

Becoming Guest Services Supervisor is a part of my journey to achieve a better career in this Hospitality industry.

Q: What do you love most about your work?

Being part of the Front of the House team is happiness. I can assist the guests, meet lots of people and learn different things daily.

Q: What hobbies do you enjoy when you are not at work?

I occupy my free time with reading books, doing creative stuff like arts and crafts, and watching different series and movies.

Q: What extraordinary experiences guests should embark on when on holiday at Meeru Island Resort and Spa? Your recommendations?

Holidaymakers can enjoy a half-day or full-day trip via one of our yachts and explore North Male’ atoll in top-notch luxury, swim, or snorkel with marine life.

Q: What advice or motivational words can you give to those who want to work in Guest Services?

“What you say and how you say it matters – smile and give your best in everything you do”

Meet the Team: Meeru’s Azheem System Administrator

Information technology plays a major role in this contently evolving world, therefore keeping up with the newest trends in this digital world is indeed very important.

For this month’s feature on Meet the Team, we decided to go around to have a word with one of the minds behind our information technology team Mr. Ismai Azheem Mohamed, System Administrator. Azheem as his colleagues calls him has dedicatedly worked in Meeru for 9 years.

In this digital world being one of the responsible person to upkeep the computer systems in Meeru and other CCR properties is a very challenging job.  I truly enjoy the work environment as every day is new day to learn and do better

Q: Tell me about yourself and what it is like to be a System Administrator at the resort? How long have you been with the resort?

Working in Meeru for a total of 9 years I would say that my job is very technical in all aspects. There is a torrent of new things to do with every passing minute, taunting you with various levels of urgency. The work I do has a very visceral and noticeable effect on the productivity of the people I serve be it the guests or my internal customers that are my colleagues.

Q: Tell me a bit about yourself and your background, where are you from and where you have worked and how it has shaped you?

I started working as an IT Trainee and later have been promoted to Junior Network Administrator. This work field is my passion and as I improve, Meeru has also compensated me with experience and promotion. In 2018, I was again promoted to Assistant Network Administrator and then as a Network Administrator.  After years of dedication I am currently the Systems Administrator at Meeru Island Resort and Spa.

While working, I pursued further studies and earned a Diploma in Information Technology back in 2015 and some other certifications related to IT, particularly in the hospitality industry. Learning and sharing my skills and knowledge to others is happiness.

Q: Why did you decide to become a System Administrator and how you come to be in the Maldives?

A: Being a Systems Administrator is one part of my journey to grow forward with my career in the hospitality industry and this growing Technical field in this digital world.

Q: What do you love most about your work?

A: What I love about my job is every time I can help the team to do their jobs efficiently, less stressfully, and more effectively, it is the best feeling and to a great extent, why I do what I do.  And the fact that I do get to work with new technologies is heaven.

Q: What hobbies do you enjoy when you are not at work?

A: I enjoy gaming, reading and watching movies as part of my relaxation therapy to disconnect from work.

Q: What is your favourite sports, what sports do you play?

A: Football is my top favourite and in Meeru I am about to enjoy playing these sports with my colleagues.
