A Few Things You Should Know About The Maldives

Many of you have made the Maldives, and Meeru Island Resort & Spa, your second home, returning year after year to enjoy this beautiful tropical paradise. You know and have experienced first-hand the beauty of the Maldives: the warm weather, powder-soft, white beaches and startlingly clear turquoise waters. Now, we wish to share a little more about the Maldivian culture and heritage.

Let’s start with the language! Maldivians speak Dhivehi, which has Sanskrit, Sinhalese and Arabic influences. Here are some common phrases that you can add to your vocabulary:

Hello: “assalaamu alaikum” is a more formal greeting while “maruhabaa” is informal.

Thank you: “shukuriyyaa.”

You’re welcome: “maruhabaa.”

The Meeru Museum

The Maldives islands are believed to have been inhabited for the last 3,000 years. The first settlers were from southern India and Sri Lanka as well as from Arab and African countries. Tourism began in 1970 and slowly started developing. Our Meeru Museum exhibits several Maldivian artefacts, from traditional wooden boxes which were used as travel storage (lakudi foshi) to wooden Maldivian sandals which were worn until the early 1980s (ujjehi maravalhhi). Drop by the Museum anytime for a glimpse into the fascinating history of the Maldives.

Maldivian food can best be described as spicy and from the sea. The food is heavily reliant on naturally available food sources such as coconuts, tuna and reef fish. The initial settlers passed on their usage of curries and spices, and to this day, Maldivian food is heavily influenced by that. Every Friday is Maldivian night in Meeru. In our buffet restaurants, you can enjoy various delicacies from Garudhiya (fish soup) and Huni Roshi (coconut-based flatbread).

Maldivian Cultural Show: Bodu Beru Performance.

Music and dance is an integral part of Maldivian Culture. Bodu Beru refers to the traditional drums and the cultural dance that is performed to the sound of these drums. The dance performance is a form of storytelling and entertainment and varies depending on the occasion. After a sumptuous Maldivian Night dinner on Fridays, we have a Maldivian Culture & History Presentation, followed by a Bodu Beru Performance at Kakuni Bar. How To Pick The Right Villa For Your Vacation

Meeru Island Resort & Spa offers a wonderful location to experience the magical beauty of the Maldives. For guests travelling with family, Beach Villas and Garden Rooms accommodate guests of all ages. The villas are spacious, adorned with tropical décor and come with a day bed. This can be used to relax when lounging in the room, or it can be an additional bed for younger guests. Outside, the furnished deck is a place where you can relax while enjoying views of the garden or the beach.

Adult travellers have the option of choosing Jacuzzi Beach Villas, Water Front Villas or Jacuzzi Water Villas which are all located in the Adults-Only area. Situated on the beach, Jacuzzi Beach Villas and Water Front Villas offer privacy and scenic views of paradise. They come with a private, walled-in outdoor area that features a Jacuzzi. Your nights can be spent sipping champagne and soaking in the Jacuzzi while enjoying the night sky.

Jacuzzi Water Villas are secluded overwater bungalows on stilts. Luxurious and beautiful, they have a private sundeck with stairs into the sea, providing direct access to the ocean from the comfort of your villa. Inside, the bedroom is larger, and the room is fitted with all the amenities you need to have a fantastic holiday.

We begin the month with great news. This June, Our Executive Chef will be introducing a brand new menu in Asian Wok Restaurant. The kitchen team has collaborated to present an exciting new menu at our popular over-water restaurant. The new menu includes amazing seafood and curry dishes that are bound to please. You can expect delicious dining at great value. I encourage you to have at least one memorable meal at Asian Wok Restaurant during your holiday in Meeru.

We continue to work towards making your stay in Meeru magical. For additional comfort in all our villas, we will introduce our ‘Comfort Menu’, which offers guests a selection of different pillows and the option to soften your mattress for that perfect night’s sleep. We want you to feel right at home, in paradise.

World Turtle Day, In Photos

Today is World Turtle Day! A day when turtles are #shellebrated, get it? May 23 is observed the world over to create awareness of and share knowledge about the protection of turtles. The sea turtles that abound in Meeru Island Resort & Spa waters are part of a species that has lived for more than 150 years! The way you travel to Meeru to seek sun, sea and sand, sea turtles often travel for thousands of miles, crossing oceans as they feed, before returning home. The common species spotted around here is the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle. Here are our favourite photos of sea turtles taken by you.

Easter in Meeru was filled with lots of fun and activities for the kids and the young at heart. We welcomed lots of happy families during the holiday, and it was great to see all of the smiling faces around the resort as they enjoyed the perfect weather.
